Not a good year for the animals, so far
In 2006, when I updated the animal standings almost every week for almost someone to read, the animal teams combined record was 130-94, for a nice winning percentage of just over 58%. Which is even more impressive when you consider that they play each other a lot. In 2008, so far this year, the animal teams have a combined record of 51-62, just over 45%. Check out the standings after week 9:

Key Week 10 match-ups: Seahawks @ Dolphins The Birds are having a decent season thanks to four teams that are slightly above average. The Other Assorted Animals have a bunch of average teams and are a few games back. The Cats are not having a good year, despite containing the best animal team, which has more than half of the 10 wins by Cat-themed teams. But there is good news on the horizon: their record will be better after week 10. | | Sunday, June 15th, 2008 | | 12:44 pm |

2007 USPC
The USPC is over and the wait to find out whether I did well enough on it, begins. For only the second time in eight tests, I didn't get any puzzles wrong (barring typos, I guess), so maybe that's a good omen. At least if I don't make the team, it won't be due to a stupid error on a puzzle. The two I didn't do: Circuit Maze: For some unknown reason, when reading the instructions I thought the actual puzzle was going to have the two levels of the maze on separate grids. So I hadn't taken the time to think of the best way to solve this. And it gives me a headache just looking at it, so I just moved on to the next problem. Double Murder: I did spend some time on this, ended up with a contradiction, and moved on, as it was getting close to the end of the test time. It really felt like it should have been going faster than it was, too. Doing it after the test, it was contradiction-free, but still took a little more time than I would like to solve. | | Sunday, August 27th, 2006 | | 9:18 pm |

Playoff news: The three Other Assorted Animals playoff teams all have byes for the first round, as does the lone playoff representative from the Birds. The Cats also have three playoff teams, all of whom will play in the first round. By decree of the Keeper of the Animal Standings, the playoff game results will not count in the Animal Standings. It is interesting to note, however, that if they were counted, the Cats just barely have a chance to catch the Other Assorted Animals, but only if everything went their way. | | Tuesday, December 6th, 2005 | | 4:57 pm |

Animal Standings, Week 9
Okay, due mostly to me being lazy, I didn't post any animal standings updates for last week. I know, I know, you're disappointed and upset. To make it up to you, I will post this week's standings twice. Since the last update, the Other Assorted Animals have caught up and passed the Cats, while the Birds have dropped to .500. Is it a weblog or a journal?
So, I figure now is an excellent time to start a bog*, and since I already have this one set up, I might as well get some use out of it. I will use it to post a variety of amusing or meaningless things. A couple months from now, when its first reader stumbles in (clearly hopelessly lost), perhaps it will provide him and/or her with something to do for a while. After all, what else is the internet for? * The spell check didn't like "blog", and suggested "bog". I thought it was appropriate. |
